High-Altitude Training Facilities on Paardeplaats Nature Retreat, South Africa:
.

In a nutshell, Paardeplaats Nature Retreat, is a perfect, 500ha facility for High-Altitude training, in South Africa, set in beautiful, private surroundings in total privacy and safety, all between the altitude of 1900 and 2050m above sea level. Our facility is securely situated about 2km from the R37 main road, on the Long Tom Mountain Pass.

Paardeplaats has approximately 25 – 30 km of prepared and well-maintained hiking and cycling routes which are perfect for High-Altitude training purposes. Together with our fine accommodation, with either catered or self-catered facilities that are available, one needs look no further. We were recently awarded 9.4 points out of 10 by Booking.Com for our venue, based on visitor’s comments. This is quite remarkable!

Brian, a retired Land Surveyor, owned and ran the award-winning restaurant, ‘Die Tonteldoos Bistro’ in Dullstroom for 14 years, (from 1991) and together with Lungisile his assistant, are able to take care of your dietary needs, as he did for so many High-Altitude training athletes in the restaurant in the early days in Dullstroom, or you could also use our excellent self-catering facilities. Our water is pure and clean, supplied by a permanent mountain spring, on the farm.

We have four spacious en suite rooms, all with quality bedding and down duvets, that could sleep up to 10 people. We’re totally off the grid with no power outages, a substantial solar system with plug points in all rooms, for computers and cell phone charging. We have good WhatsApp reception.

The farm is situated 12km from Lydenburg on the R37, where there are good shopping and medical facilities available.

Being at high altitude we are in the mist belt, so our weather is often variable, particularly in summer. Warm clothing is therefore a prerequisite throughout the year. Summers are mostly pleasantly warm but seldom cold, except in periods of high rainfall. We record about 1000mm of rain per summer (October to May). Winters are cold at night, often plunging to minus 5°C, but balmy to warm during the day. Winters are dry with frost at night.

We are centrally situated being, 100km from Kruger Lowveld international airport and Nelspruit, and 350km from OR Tambo airport. There is a bus service that operates from OR Tambo, which passes our farm gate on the R37, four times per week.

We are fluent in English and Afrikaans; Gerda speaks Dutch and is fluent in French. Our 3 staff members are fluent in Siswati and Lungisile speaks English well.
